Farbenfrohes Glück

Goldstaub-Taggecko auf Big Island, Hawai’i.

Behind the Scene

The image at the top was taken in early 2012. It is one of my favorites – and it was entirely unplanned. I happened to be at the right place at the right time on Big Island, Hawai’i.

I was just on my way back from a waterfall, which was impressively majestic after days and days of rain. Just close to the parking lot  I spotted a beautiful pink flower in a wall of leafy green.

Flowers are generally nice objects for a photographer. They look good and at the same time they do not run away. I set up the tripod and the cameras and began to take pictures of the blossom in all kinds of settings and from every possible angle. Perfect, apart from a stranger who, presumably after having smoked something, approached me and my equipment and trying to find contact. So much about the contrast to what is happening in front of the camera and what is happening behind.

Suddenly I noticed a green spot on the flower, which turned out to be a nose. The surprise was great when it finally revealed its identity as gold dust day gecko. Geckos can be quite nimble. This photo model allowed for a short series of shots, before it moved on. As these geckos love sweets, it was probably interested in the blossoms nectar.

Intrigued by this encounter, I forgot the stoned guy and watched the area more closely. E voila: A small paradise revealed itself in front of me. All kinds of different species of reptiles were crawling around. I observed  their daily live: territory fights in between males, females choosing, and, how could it be different on Hawai’i, sunbathing. I was looking at a microcosm and spent more than an hour with those little creatures.

In some cultures, geckos are considered to bring luck. I wish you all a colorful weekend. Sometimes the extraordinary is close and just waits to be discovered.
